Rekha Bhardwaj

Rekha Bhardwaj is an Indian playback singer. She is known in the industry for her distinctive singing style. A disciple of Pundit Amarnath ji ,Rekha received National Film Award for the Best Female Playback Singer for the film Ishqiya in 2011. In 2012, she was the co recipient of the Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer (Female) for the song "Darling" from 7 Khoon Maaf. She is married to the famous director, producer, and music composer, Vishal Bhardwaj.Rekha was a student of music at Hindu College, Delhi. She released her first album titled 'Ishqa Ishqa' in 2002 and won critical acclaim. Her song in the movie Omkara, "Namak Issq Ka", written by Gulzar won her accolades and launched her career as serious artist.

Her songs have brought back an earthiness to Indian music especially Bollywood that was gently veering itself towards western music. Rekha Bhardwaj has created a blend of sufi and hindi popular music with influences of folk and classical singing in her unique verdant voice. Her versatility of musical genres has earned her a title of "Janis Joplin " of India by her serious admirers.

Rekha has recently presented her unplugged series at MTV Coke Studio India and given a much needed support to the independent music in subcontinent. Rekha Bhardwaj is married to the creative Vishal Bhardwaj, a noted film maker in India and together they are introducing India to a audio visual mix of history, contemporary culture and language.

Rekha Bhardwaj will be performing with her full band at the spectacular stage of Mississauga Celebration Square on the evening of Saturday 16th of August 2014.
